Hello

ABOUT GOLDENDOODLES

Goldendoodles, the charming crossbreed of Golden Retrievers and Poodles, have captured the hearts of dog lovers around the world. We feel like it’s the perfect breed!  You combine the intelligence and easy to train temperament of the poodle, plus their very low shedding qualities, and curly coats with the loyalty and human focused nature of Golden Retrievers, and it’s a match made in heaven!  Goldendoodles are known for their friendly and affectionate temperament. They typically exhibit a loving and gentle nature, making them excellent family pets. They are social and enjoy spending time with both humans and other animals, often forming strong bonds with their owners. Their playful and energetic disposition means they can be great companions for active families or individuals, but they also know how to relax and cuddle when it's time to wind down. Overall, Goldendoodles are cherished for their adaptable and loving personalities, which make them a popular choice among dog enthusiasts.

There are so many different options to choose from also!  Not only do they vary in size but also in coat texture and of course, color.  Because Poodles can range from standard (full) sized to toy (very small) Goldendoodles can vary in size as well.  This offers options to suit various living situations and preferences. From the standard Goldendoodle to the miniature and toy versions, each size presents its own unique characteristics that add to the appeal of these lovable companions.

Sizes

Standard Goldendoodles

The standard Goldendoodle is the largest of the Goldendoodle sizes, typically weighing between 50 to 90 pounds and standing around 20 to 24 inches at the shoulder.

Miniature Goldendoodles

For those seeking a more compact canine companion, mini Goldendoodles are the perfect option! Miniature Goldendoodles typically weigh between 15 to 45 pounds and stand around 14 to 17 inches tall.  This is the size we breed at Old Lake Doodles.  It’s the perfect size, in our opinion.  They aren’t so big that they will overwhelm small kids or adults (puppies jump a lot!), and they aren’t so small that you might injure them if they get underneath your feet, which puppies often do!  This does actually happen!  Plus, they aren’t too big to climb in your lap which is typically one of their favorite places to be.  Training can be more manageable and their appetites aren’t as big as the standard sized variety.

Toy Goldendoodles

Toy Goldendoodles can weigh as little as 10 pounds and stand under 14 inches. These smaller sizes make them a good fit for apartments or homes with limited space. One thing to note is, in general, the smaller the Goldendoodle, the larger percentage of poodle genes it has.

Choosing the Perfect Fit

When considering a Goldendoodle, selecting the right size is a decision that involves factors like living space, activity level, and personal preferences. Standard Goldendoodles are well-suited for families with larger homes and outdoor spaces, while miniature and toy Goldendoodles can thrive in smaller homes or urban environments. Regardless of size, Goldendoodles share a common thread of love and companionship, making them great additions to any household.

Goldendoodle Coats

The Goldendoodle's coat can be wavy, curly, or even “straight”, offering various textures that make each individual dog truly one-of-a-kind.

"Straight" Coats

Let me clarify why we use parenthesis when talking about straight coats.  When we say “straight” what people typically picture is a flat coat, the long silky look that is typical in golden retrievers.  Straight in a Goldendoodle still has quite a bit of texture but isn’t considered wavy.  See the illustrations below.  We personally love a straighter coat because of the fluffy look the coat takes on.  It is also be easier to maintain, which is a big plus!

Wavy and Curly Coats

Goldendoodles can display an array of coat textures, from "straight" to curly.  "Straight" coats are our favorite.  They have a fluffier teady bear look and the coats are typically easier to maintain.  The wavy coat is what is most commonly seen.  It's characterized by looser, curls or waves.  This type of coat often requires less grooming to maintain its natural charm than a curly coat. On the other hand, the curly coat showcases tighter, curls that are more reminiscent of the poodle coat. The curly coat is "higher maintenance" and requires more frequent brushing and grooming.

Shedding

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.  There are however, breeds that are allergy friendly!  This is one thing that makes the Goldendoodle breed so popular.  They typically have low or very low shedding coats.  For some families, this is a must because of an allergic member of the family.  For others, it's simply a preference.   Our puppies will be low or very low shedding.

Grooming Requirements

Regardless of the coat texture be prepared to have your Mini Goldendoodle fully groomed every 6-8 weeks.  They will need brushing in between groomings as well. Lots of people choose to have their Goldendoodle cut shorter in the summer and longer in the winter.  There are many different "looks" they can have.
